Thanks to Russ, David and Anne for their replies,,

Russ and Anne, I take it in your cases the chickens could scratch and turn the ground only through the mesh (snake wire in Russ' case). This would decrease the effectiveness of the tractor, but I guess we could add a bottomless section accessed through a rat-proof sliding door. I would also be very interested in seeing a copy of the design you mention Anne if at all possible. Incidentally, this person does have a cat, but it is not allowed outside - probably a good thing for the garden overall I think.

And thanks David for your note of caution re so called support species becoming competitors with fruit trees - I have seen tagasaste used successfully as orchard interplant, but as you note only with careful management. There is a demand for both animal fodder and firewood in this case so we may cautiously trial at least tagasaste. Will consider adding lucerne (any advice on getting this established amidst kikuyu and on how compatible this is with integrated ducks/geese?) between rows and shrubs (pigeon pea and crotalaria) around the perimeter.

  Best,
  Dan
