6. Reports and Networking in August
The Melbourne industry workshop enjoyed excellent attendance and feedback
on actions of BFA over past 18 months since last workshop. Thank you to all
of you who attended, including those flying in from other states.
The Inputers (AI's and AP's) workshop in Brisbane also produced clear
directives, in particular unanimous support for a new charging system which
will enable more effective promotion of organic input products under the bud
logo. A new initiative for banner advertising on the BFA website was also
launched, which will come available in the coming months to companies
wishing to advertise.

7. International News
IFOAM reports that Organic Farmers and Growers (OF&G) of the UK and
Instituto Mediterraneo di Certificazione (IMC) of Italy are both now IFOAM
accredited. Also appying for IFOAM accreditation is the certification body
Bios of Italy. This brings the total number of accredited certification
bodies to 28 with 4 certification bodies in the process.
Managing Director of ACO Quentin Kennedy reports that the USDA will impose
severe penalties for those attempting to import products into the US in
contravention of the USDA NOP. This is viewed as a civil offence. It would
appear that a number of certification organisations within the organic
industry have been misleading their clients into believing that they will be
recognised for access into the US market. This is patently incorrect unless
those certifiers are directly USDA accredited. There are only two certifiers
in Australia which are USDA accredited: ACO and NASAA. The next BFA NOP and
JAS training is in Sydney on the 12th September (prior booking essential,
application form is available on the BFA website.
The BFA's GE Sub-Committee reports that according to Adrian Measner,
Canadian Wheat Board president and chief executive officer, the CWB may
consider legal action to stop Monsanto Co. from growing GM wheat in Canada
outside limited government-run trials. "We've given strong assurances to our
customers that we will make sure this situation is resolved in Canada, and
we intend to take whatever action necessary to do that," said Measner. "More
than 80 per cent of the board's customers have said they do not want to buy
wheat that may contain GM seeds".
Last year, for the first time, US Congress appropriated $3 million for
organic research and required that this be an annual expenditure for the
next five years. Our federal budget is now $2.14 trillion. The USDA budget
is $74 billion. But the total annual organic outlay, which also includes
money for marketing, economic analysis and enforcement of organic standards,
approaches only $8 million.

McDonald's Corporation has announced plans that call for its suppliers
worldwide to phase-out of animal growth promotion antibiotics that are used
in human medicine. The Global Policy on Antibiotics also creates a set of
standards for McDonald's direct meat suppliers and encourages indirect
suppliers to take similar steps to eliminate growth-promoting antibiotics
and to reduce other antibiotic usage.

Solutia Inc. and Monsanto Co. have agreed to pay roughly $700 million to
settle claims by more than 20,000 Alabama residents over PCB contamination,
plaintiffs attorneys said [ASSOCIATED PRESS: August 20].

8. BFA Member Services
Market enquiries: Strong interest is being received for vegetable juices
and dried fruits. Also being sought are confectionary makers and/or snack
food makers who are certified organic. Did you know that our search engine
is quickly becoming THE place to search for organic products in Australia?
Federal lobbying: The offices of Federal Agriculture Minister Truss and
Senator Troeth have been visited by BFA in August to progress industry
matters and to ensure that the interests and needs of the organic industry
are understood clearly by government.
Farmers Markets: We have been active in the past month checking on claimed
"organic and farmers markets" around the Sydney district which have alarmed
some consumers and retailers by potentially misleading marketing. We have
sent two "please explain" letters and will be following this matter up
further with relevant regulatory authorities. See:
http://www.farmersmarkets.org.au to check in on local farmers markets.
Residue Testing: In response to member requests, we have made available on
the BFA website a list of chemicals that the DPI Testing program of organic
and bio-dynamic produce included in their recent testing. The process and
results of this testing have greatly informed and updated the certifiers
ability to regulate organic produce, while as everyone knows, the results
were an excellent outcome of confirmation for the organic industry. The next
edition of the Certification Bulletin will cover the list of chemicals
tested. If members want a list in the meantime, please email
a.monk at bigpond.com or see our website.
Nutrition and Organics: Future editions of the Organic Advantage will have
a nutrition and health angle - reporting from around the world and within
Australian on developments relating to the positive stories the organic
industry has to tell in regard to health, safety and nutrition. BFA's
nutritionist Shane Heaton will report directly on these developments.
Have you missed the latest stories on health and nutrition and organics in
the Australian Organic Journal? Join as a member today and receive quarterly
publications of both the AOJ as well as the Certification Bulletin and of
course all member discounts and benefits. Annually $99, currently $66. Apply
on line or via our website. Bulk copies of the AOJ are available for sale
via retail outlets. Contact media at bfa.com.au to order your bulk copies if
you are a retailer or wholesaler.

Residue Testing: In response to member requests, we have made =
available=20
on the BFA website a list of chemicals that the DPI Testing program of =
organic=20

and=20
results of this testing have greatly informed and updated the =

ability to regulate organic produce, while as everyone knows, the =
results were=20
an excellent outcome of confirmation for the organic industry. The =

tested.=20
If members want a list in the meantime, please email <A=20

Nutrition and Organics: Future editions of the Organic =
Advantage=20
will have a nutrition and health angle - reporting from around the =
world and=20
within Australian on developments relating to the positive stories the =
organic=20
industry has to tell in regard to health, safety and nutrition. BFA's=20
nutritionist Shane Heaton will report directly on these developments.=20
