Joel Meadows here from inner Melbourne, Cool temperate, a lot less rain than people think, a lot less rain than we need.

Dear James,
Can you detail the myths? I know just buying local, or within 100kms doesn't make something a sustainable product by default, but it does reduce transportation (a hugely important issue for sustainability) and potentially puts you in direct contact with producers (how else are you to know that it is local).

I do have Peter Singers new book, but I'm second in line in our house to read it.

Joel.

I noticed Peter Singer has been trying to explode a few environmental myths lately - including the "buy within 100km" or buy Australian mantras - which do not necessarily indicate anything about sustainability.

I saw snow peas from China in Aldi last week! Fortunately, shops are now obliged to reveal the source of the produce so consumers can buy Australian.
