Our friends at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) are holding a not to
be missed free event at UNSW in Sydney on July 25th.  Details are below:


The annual Jack Beale Memorial Lecture is being held Tuesday 25th July from
6.00pm in the Clancy Auditorium, UNSW. 

This year's lecture is the first of the Jack Beale Memorial Lecture series.
The Honourable Jack Beale AO, a distinguished UNSW alumnus, achieved
outstanding success in so many aspects of his life up until his recent
passing. His enthusiasm, generosity and wealth of knowledge will be missed.
Fortunately, his legacy will continue through the Jack Beale Memorial
Lectures.

Distinguished Professor Steve Rayner (James Martin Professor of Science and
Civilisation, University of Oxford) will give an interesting presentation
entitled "Wicked Problems, Clumsy Solutions: diagnoses and prescriptions for
environmental ills". This year's first Memorial Lecture will discuss the
different approaches needed to overcome the complex and persistent
environmental problems that face the world in the 21st century.  It will
address the worldwide organisational responses which tend to domesticate
wicked problems rather than resolve them. These 'clumsy' solutions raise
important issues for public participation and interdisciplinary endeavour.
They may enable us to influence complex systems to achieve desirable
outcomes, despite our not having clear ideas about the end point...This is a
must see event for every Australian!
