Hi folks,
It is with regret that I have to inform you that this is the last posting of
the permaculture-oceania email list. As mine was the first posting it is
appropriate that one of mine is also the last. Bookends of a kind.
I have been running this list for six or so years and it is time for me to
step back and create an opportunity for someone else to provide this service
to the permaculture community. After daily moderation of the list over this
period of time I am sad to see it go and yet I feel a burden lift - to not
have to seek out internet café's when I am on holidays will be a great
relief!
I have been informed that the Board of Directors of PIL (Permaculture
International Limited) is looking into options for setting up something. I
wish the Board success and look forward to being a part of that new online
community when it eventuates. You will most likely have a period of no
permaculture list emails while they get themselves organised but I am sure
that once it is all sorted out that it will be great as there are many more
communications tools around now than there were back in 2000. Some people
will likely shift over to web forums and others will seek out alternate
email lists in the mean time dependant on how people like to receive and
interact with their community news.
This has been the second iteration of this list which I originally hosted
through UNSW servers and later shifted across to the Cat servers to get
better functionality and the capacity to intercept and block spam which was
rapidly earning the 'pain in the neck' status that it currently enjoys.
To bring you into the picture of what is happening right now the
organisation 'Cat' that has been providing server space and much appreciated
tech support to me as the list administrator and moderator is shutting down.
The summary on their webpage says:
"We are writing to tell you, urgently, that Catalyst needs to stop our
internet hosting within a month. If you, or your group have a website, email
list, web domain name, or cat email address with us, you will need to make
other arrangements as soon as humanly possible. Your absolute deadline for
moving your site, list, email accounts and/or domain name hosting needs to
be 15th of November 2006."

This is a real shame as the Cat crew of web geeks especially Andy, Leah,
Hugh and John have been fantastic and I have really appreciated all of the
help that they have provided to me to support the delivery of this
communication tool for the permaculture community.
I would also like to greatfully acknowledge Paul Osmond who has been our
backup moderator throughout the life of the list. Paul and I were prepared
to carry on and I was well advanced in moving it back to the UNSW servers
however PIL has been petitioned by a list member to do something independent
in its place.
The resilience and strength of the permaculture-oceania list has been a most
impressive thing and I would like to thank you all dear list members for
your invaluable contributions. I have laughed and been amazed and provided
with such valable advice and information that I don't know where to begin.
99.9% of the list members that I have met on line and in person have been
the most wonderful people I could have ever hoped to come across. I hope to
continue to bump into you in both the real and electronic worlds and to
develop even stronger friendships. If you see me around online or in the
street please come up and say hello.
All the best,
Cameron - no longer list admin!
