The Power of Community: How Cuba survived "Peak Oil" Inner-West Socialist Alliance film screening Sun 24 Sept, 5pm. Resistance Centre, 23 Abercrombie St, Chippendale (near Broadway)
In the face of the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early Nineties, and a vicious economic blockade by the US, the small socialist island of Cuba suffered from almost every kind of shortage. Worst of these was a fuel shortage that affected everything from transport to food production. Faced with disaster, the Cuban people fell back on the greatest resources they had: human solidarity and innovation.
This new film traces Cuba's recovery from a country highly dependant upon fossil fuels and their by-products to a society living off organic food and developing realistic alternative sources of energy. It argues that the rest of the rest of the world will also face an energy crisis in the near future, as fossil fuels become scarcer and more expensive, a situation that we can only overcome, like Cuba, through organic farming and "the power of community".
