A reminder and update of this weekend's communal conversion of
lawn-to-food excitement:
Permablitz Numero Nueve (9) - Saturday September 16
Come along for an edible garden revolution at Shane & Vicki's on
Saturday 16th September where we can share our skills developing some
great permaculture food growing potential, sharing great healthy foods
(Vicki's veggie soup is nourishment capital N), discussions & workshops
including these activities:
*Fruit & nut tree planting
*Compost bay construction / compost making & worm-farming
*Raised garden bed making & herb gardens
*Trellis-vine installation
*Ways to work with weeds; sheet-mulching, composting, liquid
fertilizer (compost tea) even eating!
*Olive harvesting & pickling workshop
*Discussions on the Peak Oil situation, furthering networks & practical
responses such as implementing a joyful, local edible food garden!
Bringing some plants, seeds or cuttings to plant or swap with others,
any spare compost, compost / mulch ingredients (newspaper, manure, food
scraps, grass clippings sawdust etc), tools like pitch-fork, shovel or
hand trowel and or food to share would be greatly appreciated.
Come along to 4 Coling Ave Carnegie (Melway Ref 68 K8 ) anytime from
10am-4pm Saturday 16th September for another great permablitz!
Call Shane or Vicki with any Q's on: 9568-5569
Permablitz Numero Diez (10) - Sunday September 17
Sunday September 17 head on down to Luscious Lane in Nth Fitzroy from
10am (yep, our first permablitz double whammy this weekend!). Luscious
Lane is a communal edible garden tucked away in an inner urban backyard
that includes a mini-plot run by kids from North Fitzroy Community
School. Wear closed shoes, old clothes and bring your fave
snacks/drinks, gardening gloves, hat, sunnies, water, sunscreen,
handtools, (see below) wheelbarrow, and other bits and pieces mentioned
below if you have them.
Plans for the day include:
~ creating a to-scale map of the garden (for seasonal planning)
~ building a 3-bay compost system
~ learning from folk skilled in soil, composting, worm farming and
more.
~ edging vege beds with recycled timber (and covering corrugated iron
edging w rubber – byo old bike tyres)
~ creating an archway trellis (bendable, weavable materials welcome)
for the kiwifruit vines we hope to plant on the day in one of the two
large tubs either side of the sunny driveway entry path
~ planting the seedlings we're currently propogating,
~ spreading some mulch around,
~ more propagating?
~ putting together a sitting bench or two (does anyone have a belt
sander? circular saw? drill? bolts?)
~ if anyone can bring curvy ol' metal flyscreens that could become
trellises, that'd be great too.
~ maybe some scarecrow making? (bring old broom handles, hat, funky
coloured clothing, non-soggy stuffing)
~ putting up some shadecloth in a corner over the bench we'll make.
~ bring drums for barefoot singing and raindancing in the
thyme/chamomile circle afterwards to celebrate another episode in the
urban foodgrowing revolution.
The Lucious Lane crew would like to have a feel for how many folks are
coming (so they know how many muffins and hot cuppas to prepare for the
10am planning session) so text 0419 375 161 or email
(homeplanet(~at~)ozemail.com.au) to Glenda know you’re coming and
she'll send you directions.
