Dear Robyn and James,
Robyn do you have good sources for the debunking of the mobile phone and
GMO theories? As a bee keeper I'm keen to get my head around this issue
and would appreciate some sources.
James I'd concur with what Sue said, if you can find a good local bee
club you will get lots of first hand advise and a helping hand with
setting up. There are some great books out there for starting out, the
Norman Redpaths book
'A Guide to Keeping Bees in Australia' is a great introduction just to
get started. I think it is out of print but your can probably get it
Second Hand. There are lots of books out there, but I would get an
Australian book, I wouldn't bother with a US or EU book.
I would also encourage you to register your hive with the state
agricultural authority. In Victoria it only costs $15 or so annually and
it helps with testing and cross contamination issues which are very
important with bees as Robyn's posting suggests.
Cheers,
Joel Meadows

There has been a lot of postings on the permaculture ibiblio list on
disappearing bee populations and CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder) - worth
checking the archives if you want further info.
The mobile phone theory has been debunked, as has the GMO corn
theories. Fingers seem to be pointing more at farm chemicals,
particularly systemic pesticides, and the coctails of chemicals poured
into hoves to control the varroa mite. Australia is mite-free and we
need to make sure we keep it that way. Last week the mite appeared in
Hawaii. Countries experiencing CCD inclide 9 European countries, USA,
Canada and now reports off CCD are coming from Brazil. Honey bees
directly pollinate over 60% of the planets 1,500 food crops
