[Pil-pc-oceania] Methyl bromide | Regulating Pesticides | Pesticides | US EPA

I had only a little time between posting the references, which were linked to the very valuable Australian NGO "National Toxics Network" website.

I trawled through a 60-odd page US EPA doc.

Trying to glean some useful data, I did not that the EPA has confirmed that methyl bromide is toxic, including to birds, fish, and aquatics. So you wouldnt want to use the pallets in the chicken house or pond!

Generally, the likelihood of methyl bromide ending up in harmful quantities in water is negligible, or so says the EPA..

It is slow to leach out of timber and walnuts, so clearly anything woody which has been treated will tend to retain the chemical for a longer period of time.

I suppose that could be considered a bonus, in that the methyl bromide in the pallets will remain relatively stable, but I would be wearing some of those thick leather type garden gloves when handling them. Just to be on the safe side...especially if the pallets are relatively new.

Re tyres, well they are toxic when burned, but may also be considered a useful even if temporary windbreak.

These recylced otherwise waste products at least have a value in assisting people to get their living windbreaks established. After that is achieved, the pallets/tyres whatever can be removed to another location or placed farther along in the zones beyond 0 and 1.

Hope this is of some help, as the initial establishment of gardens etc in very exposed sites is sometimes extraordinarily difficult. Though recycled industrial materials are not the ideal, they nonetheless have their uses, if used with care.

Cheers
Deb

  Hi Deb:

I did read them, thank you.
We do not have running bamboo or any other "weed" that can be used. I have tried on my block using hessian and shadecloth to slow the wind, only to find that it kept on blowing around the top and were tearing away from the bottom and top wires and my block is a lot more protected from the winds.
Land fill is our biggest weed.

Perhaps read some of these articles and make an informed decision about possible risks.

Here non returnable pallets end up as landfil.
Because of this we are using them to subdivide the 66 plots in our community garden.
We have started to plant windbreaks.
As our site is totally exposed, they will alow us some slowing of the wind and by attaching netting above them we can create shade with clinbing crops.
Out garden is being created in a carpark of the showgrounds, our temperature range is between -4 and 50 and our water is hot all year round.
