I have proven here in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney and in
Cambodia that windbreaks will get growth ahead by up to two years.
However even establishing the windbreaks - requires windbreaks - and
small plastic bags are not strong enough. So I have used shade
cloth placed vertically and then, near the vegetable garden, old
glass shower doors which are easy to get here. I place them in a
parabola shape. I place potatoes and strong Mediterranean herbs
inside these - for the vegetable garden
To establish the succession of windbreaks, I use the local wattles -
whatever grows fastest and best near me and this is whether it is
endemic or not because I will later cut it down for firewood or
mulch. I interplant with hardy natives like Westringa. So for me
Acacia howittii is excellent and takes lots of pruning and only grows
more densely.
So, at present I have 1. Shade cloth 2. Windbreak plants
3. Glass shower doors, 4. herbs.
It's about what is tough where you live, what height you finally
want, how many rows you have room for.
It's really worthwhile getting plant protection for your windbreak
really quickly for the sake of your garden.
