Agronomists urged to attend herbicide resistance update days
Australia
Tuesday, 28 August 2007
Herbicide resistance update days, will be held in Tamworth on September 4 and in Toowoomba on September 6, to provide information on the latest in herbicide resistance management.
The days will be hosted by the Northern Herbicide Resistance team, which is funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation.
The team involves officers from the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI&F) and New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI).
These information days will be of particular interest to agricultural stakeholders such as agronomists, advisers and consultants.
DPI&F weeds agronomist, Michael Widderick, from Toowoomba, said the September Herbicide Resistance update days would specifically focus on glyphosate resistance and resistance in wild oats.
"Glyphosate resistance is significant because glyphosate is relied on for fallow weed control," he said.
"Wild oat resistance has become more prevalent of late, and there are cases of resistance to multiple modes of action, therefore reducing the number of herbicide options available for its control."
Keynote speaker will be Dr Mark Van Gessel, from the University of Delaware, USA.
Dr Van Gessel's presentation will target glyphosate resistance in North America and highlight the current messages for advisers on its management.
The days will feature other presentations from key researchers from across Australia, including:
. Dr Chris Preston, University of Adelaide - Glyphosate resistance mechanisms.
. Andrew Storrie, NSW DPI - Managing glyphosate resistant barnyard grass.
. Dr David Thornby, DPI&F - Modelling glyphosate resistance in grain systems.
. Dr David Minkey, University of Western Australia - WA Herbicide Resistance Initiative's latest developments.
. Dr Michael Widderick, DPI&F - Double knock research to date.
. Jason Sabeeney, Syngenta - Improving the efficacy of bipyridils.
. Frank Taylor, Nufarm - New alternatives to glyphosate.
. Dr Peter Boutsalis, Plant Science Consulting South Australia - The potential for multiple herbicide resistance in wild oats.
. Craige Lang, Bayer - Management strategies for Group B resistance in wild oats.
. Paul Castor, consultant, Queensland - An agronomist's perspective on managing multiple resistant wild oats.
. Drew Penberthy and Garry Onus, consultants, northern New South Wales -An agronomist's perspective on the double knock technique and making it work.
The venues for the Herbicide Resistance update information days are as follows:
Tuesday, September 4 - Sustainable Farming Training Centre, Tamworth Agriculture Institute, Tamworth. 8am-5.30pm.
Thursday, September 6 - DPI&F Training Centre, 203 Tor St, Toowoomba. 8am-5.30pm.
The update days cost $55 per person.
