1. Briefing for GM-free:

The campaign to keep Australia GM-free continues and will not cease. The next 2.5 months are crucial!! Gene Ethics invites you, your family and friends to work for GM-free. Please use this alert to take action. Together we can win a GM-free future.

All canola-growing states imposed bans on commercial herbicide tolerant GM canola in 2003. Now the Victorian and NSW governments say their bans will be allowed to lapse on February 29 and March 3 2008, respectively.

Premier Brumby will let Bayer, Monsanto and their agribusiness allies roll out herbicide tolerant GM canola in Victoria without restriction or public notice. In contrast, NSW has extended its ban till July 2011 but will exempt some GM canola growing for commercial and research purposes, on a case-by-case basis. An expert panel will advise the Agriculture Minister. Not good enough, but better than victoria's free-for-all, without any notice to GM-free growers and beekeepers who need to steer of GM sites.

he majority of citizens - farmers, food processors and shoppers - want the bans extended and to stay GM-free! Several state governments also want to remain GM-free but GM canola pollen and seed will cross state borders.

The new ALP federal government should facilitate a negotiation through the Gene Technology Ministerial Council. The national uniform system of GM assessment, regulation and marketing should be kept intact.

Your commitment is needed over the next two months, to ensure the GM bans are extended so we can stay GM-free. Now read below haw you can take action too.
