Paul Henry's reasoning on GM crops (Letters, 20/12) beggars belief. He
argues that the sudden death syndrome attributed to the use of Round Up,
is an argument in favour of banning Round Up, not Round Up resistant
crops. That reduced yields with GM seed are an argument to farmers not
to buy GM seed, not ban GM, that patent violations resulting from
cross-contamination with neighbouring crops is a legal problem, not a GM
problem.
Mr Henry, your first assertion is contradictory - the purpose of Round
Up resistant crops is to allow its increased use, so why would it be
banned? Reduced yields are a problem to everyone if GM affected crops
are all that is available to farmers because cross-contamination of
neighbouring non-GM crops. Frankly, compared with possible destruction
or severe compromise to our food system, potential intellectual property
rights legal issues for big agro-corporations resulting from
cross-pollination, is not my priority.
I'm afraid your segmented thinking which demonstrates a very narrow
cause-effect approach, ignoring the wider holistic picture, is
symptomatic of the kind of simplistic approach that seems to
characterise many of the arguments in favour of GM.
