ABOUT DR. KAMI POTHUKUCHI
Kami Pothukuchi is associate professor of urban planning at Wayne State
University. In 2006-07, she also served as a fellow at Michigan State
University's Global Urban Studies Program.
Dr. Pothukuchi's research examines the links between food and the health of
communities and regions, and the roles public and nonprofit agencies might
play to foster these links.
Her papers explore such topics as the contributions of urban agriculture to
neighborhood health and improvement, efforts to attract grocery supermarkets
to underserved communities, local food policy's contributions to community
development, community food assessment as a first step in food planning, and
roles of urban planning agencies in building more sustainable food systems.
Recently, she co-authored a policy guide on community and regional food
planning that was formally adopted by the American Planning Association.
This policy guide will help guide local food-planning and inform related
federal and state policy development. She is currently engaged in two
research projects: one looks at successful retail grocery outlets in
low-income communities for the lessons they offer for neighborhoods that are
currently underserved; the other examines food safety practices of grocery
stores in low income communities.
She has published in Agriculture and Human Values, Journal of the American
Planning Association, Journal of Planning Education and Research, the
Economic Development Quarterly, and other professional and popular outlets.
A co-authored guide: What's Cooking in Your Community's Food System? was
published by the Community Food Security Coalition in 2002.
Dr. Pothukuchi is also actively involved in grassroots efforts. She has
served two terms on the governing board of the Community Food Security
Coalition, a national organization that conducts policy advocacy and
regional organizing, and offers training and technical assistance to
grassroots organizations, to promote community food security. She also
volunteers with organizations engaged in community-food issues in Detroit
and Ann Arbor, Michigan, and New Orleans, Louisiana.
