g'day laurence,

rodents don't have a role in any culture! perma' or otherwise, the way i see
it they are destructive non native pests, which not only do damage to
produce but can do some pretty horredous damage to homes etc.,. if they get
into your buildings about the first thing they do is chew all and any wires
and cables don't need to tell you the end results there.

you can use spring traps but it is hard to get especially rats to take the
baits although potato and pumpkin seeds work about the best, you can buy
those cage traps again costly to buy and no guarantees it will give you any
control, been there done that.

or you can bite the bullet and lay baits the best bait is 'tomcat' from the
produce agency, keep those renewed and you will get good management, find
out wher they are coming from ie.,. naighbour or other, when the bait take
effect you will usually find the dead buggers heading back to where they
came from, usually a reliable source of water.

they are a pest so no pussy footing around with them.

i suppose they do fit pemaculture because the dead'uns can be used as
fertiliser.

With peace and brightest of blessings,

len & bev
