Robyn,
Your information about Roberto Perez's visit is wonderful and the response
so far is inspiring. The Permaculture Association of SA wants to express
its interest in facilitating him to visit Adelaide South Australia where
urban permaculture strategies have some history. Please register our
interest. Our secretary, Pedro, is onto it now and and a task group will be
convened.
Congratulations on your 100th course coming up too.
Rainwater tanks.
The use of these is long established here. Plastic tanks are more expensive
than galvanised iron in SA. Many of the plastic products are imported from
interstate and I'd reckon that there may be more total energy imbued in
their production. In the lowermidnorth of SA there are galv tank
manufacturers in the larger towns and you can actually shop around. A
manufacturer in Jamestown uses a plastic film sprayed onto the internal
called "aquaplate". His price plus transport is cheaper than another
manufacturer closer to me in Clare. A 2000 gall tank is $1500, 5000 is
$2300. They get cheaper the bigger they are. Galvanised iron has proven
longevity if set up and managed well. I've had a liner placed in a 22,000
gall concrete tank that leaked. The installer and his crew were swiggin
beer that(very hot,1989)day it was built and I think the product suffered.
The liner has worked well. I also retrofitted a 2000 gall galv tank with a
liner too. This was good until I had to enter this tank to recover a piece
of the inlet pipe. Since, a leak has appeared due to my (barefoot) pressure
on the floor. Very sensitive. Best not to have to re-enter after
installation.
Regards, Colin Ball

Right. Howard's out. Rudd wants to find the best policies. Permaculture is
clearly the answer. We need to get that across loud and clear. Can anyone
out there get an audience with Garrett, the new agrigulture minister and
rudd himself? he is looking for answers and we have them.
there has been alot of discussion about lobbying instead of a permaculture
political party. regardless of the political party status, we need to lobby.
We need to invite garrett etc to APC9, get them to see that permaculture is
the answer.
Heady optomism. And 4 greens in the senate - we need to get them firmly on
side, Get Up also.
Lots of love to all,
Tamara

Just make sure the concrete slab you put the tank on is swept
completely clean before the tank is put in position. I am told that
even little pebbles can work their way through the plastic because of
all the weight and can create holes in the bottom.
We had a PhD in hemp do an excellent presentation at the last
Permaculture North meeting. He passed around a sample of a concrete-
like substance made from the short fibres inside hemp stems mixed
with lime and a bonding agent (as opposed to the long fibres used for
textiles which are taken from the outside of the stem). It looked and
felt like concrete but was about one-tenth or more of the weight. He
said if we're ever allowed to grow hemp in this country it will be
great for water tanks and affordable houses too. Hemp fibre is only
available from Thailand and China at this time. But maybe in 20
years time when your plastic tank has reached its use-by date we'll
be able to grow our own tanks and houses ... that is if we're still
here then, hey.

Robyn

I know the subject has been discussed before on this list but I've
just read some most interesting facts about urine in an article by
Graham Lawton at New Scientist Tech:
http://technology.newscientist.com/article/mg19225831.600
It's very long but well worth a look so why not print a copy and
leave it in the loo to read later? Imagine if our local authorities
had the wherewithal to adopt urine separation systems and thus be
able to turn sewage plants into net producers of clean energy, clean
water and organic fertiliser.
In a world where waste, clean water and energy efficiency are amongst
the most important challenges we face, we should unarguably be
considering the possibility of killing three birds with one stone
especially in big cities and towns that are the biggest poolluters of
all (pun intended).
Luv & peas,
Robyn

Hi Robyn,
In case you don't already have contacts in inner west Sydney, there is
a Latin American hut at Addison Road Community Centre, Marrickville
which is on a large area of land next to a large multi-function hall.
Addison Road Community Centre is easily accessible and hosts numerous
big events for a large catchment area.
Aleida Guevara (Che's daughter) spoke outdoors at the Latin hut where
there is a weekly BBQ for the Latin-American communities as well as
solidarity events. The Cuban Consul and her husband are regular
visitors and would of course want to be there to hear Roberto. They
attend all Cuban events in Sydney.

Correction folks,
The price of NON-GM Canola went up $20 per tonne last Friday,
not GM Canola (as was erroneously posted in yesterday's email).
The SMH poll is still in progress, see link below.

Deb
Farmonline is carrying three articles this am re GM.
Here's the most encouraging one:
GM crops: Vic Labor MPs fight to keep ban
By DAVID ROOD - Australia
Tuesday, 27 November 2007
Vic State Labor MPs have expressed "grave fears" that lifting the Vic
Government's controversial ban on genetically modified (GM) crops would harm
Victoria's environment, economy, and green image.
Newly elected MP, Martin Foley, has joined four caucus colleagues from
across Labor's factions in calling for a continuation of the ban on GM
canola crops.
But Premier John Brumby has been a supporter of GM technology and in a
recent interview with The Age, flagged that the moratorium will be lifted.
The current Victorian moratorium is due to expire next February.
State Cabinet was briefed today by Sir Gustav Nossal, who chaired a
scientific panel on the economic impact of removing the ban.
His panel's concludes there is no great health or environmental risks, with
great economic benefits likely to be derived from lifting the ban.
But just two days after being sworn in as the member for Albert Park,
replacing John Thwaites, Mr Foley wrote to Vic Agriculture Minister, Joe
Helper, arguing that lifting the ban would harm Victoria's grain and dairy
industries.
Mr Foley was chief-of-staff to former Agriculture Minister, Bob Cameron.
"I hold grave fears that the move towards lifting the current moratorium on
the commercial release of GM canola - and possibly, by extension, other GM
commercials - will disadvantage Victoria's relative position in regards to
both its international export competitors and our status as a trading
partner," he writes in his letter, sent to the panel.
The Age has revealed that Mr Brumby is facing a backlash from his Labor
caucus over the GM issue, with one MP attacking the Premier's "arrogance"
and "crash-through style".
In a display of dissent last week, a special meeting of caucus, attended by
about half of Labor's 74 MPs, criticised the decision making process and put
concerns directly to Mr Brumby about the health, environmental and economic
impacts of lifting the ban.
Labor MPs with seats in regional areas and those with a large number of
Greens supporters have also expressed concern at the political impact of
lifting the ban.
The other MPs to make submissions to the review were Tammy Lobato, Christine
Campbell, Carlo Carli and Jenny Mikakos.
In his submission, Mr Carli proposed that the moratorium be extended for at
least four years.
"The risks of lifting the moratorium are greater than the risks associated
with keeping it," he said.
Upper house MP, Ms Mikakos argued that the introduction of GM crops posed a
major threat to Australia's reputation as a producer of clean and green
agricultural products.
Yesterday, Mr Brumby said the Government had received the report from Sir
Gustav, and that it would be considered by cabinet, with a decision to be
made on the moratorium before Christmas.
Victorian Nationals leader Peter Ryan said GM crops would advance
Australia's position in world markets, and there was no longer the need for
the moratorium.
"There is simply no basis to the assertion that GM crops will do damage to
the state's clean, green image," he said.
Removing the ban has the support of the Liberal and National parties.
