 Thanks to Sue, Pat, and Russ for your answers.

 I had some trouble coming to terms with the idea that there
 was that much fresh produce grown locally .. given the huge
 numbers of overseas (or at least interstate) fruit seen in the
 markets, but I guess this is a high visibility and notable exception
 thing after all.

 I suppose the timing is just particularly bad for us here in Sydney,
 insofar as the propensity to build on arable land is about to remove
 (in a very difficult to recover kind of way) all that productive land
 from the game, about ten years before world+dog will realise how
 bad that idea is / was.
