Jedd is right, the UK Soil Assoc and NASAA and BFA here in OZ often quote
reports that organic has been proven to be better in scientific terms.
Regarding naming, what I am encouraged by is an increased interest in small
scale local certification where growers rely on being known in their
community as the main form of accreditation. In other words a bit of a
return to the old days: food that is grown without chemicals AND minimal
food miles

Has it?
I thought science was very much on the side of organic (in its
various guises) being healthier for the end consumer, as well as
all the players in between.
I finished reading Michael Pollan's 'The Omnivore's Dilemma' on the
weekend, and throughout that tome he cites even more recent
research that's suggesting additional reasons that science is coming
up with to support the 'organic is healthier' position.
I still think we need to come up with another name, and probably
an accompanying measurement system, though. Organic has been
diluted / neutered / annexed to the point that it's pretty much a
misleading appellation now, IMO.
Jedd.
