Dear Penny,
I know that email doesn't allow for tone to be readily communicated, but I
suspect that your last lines aren't a joke. If they are, then I apologise
and will join you in laughing at the idea that you saying that you can't
wait will be sufficient to bring discussion here to a close and have
everyone agree with you....
If your email is serious, then I'm afraid it is likely to be highly
divisive and reflect badly on you in many people's eyes. I don't know you
so I hope that frustration arising from enthusiasm has overrun your good
judgement.
Making unilateral declarations is not a good way of gaining consensus and
engaging a disparate audience. It is much more likely to result in people
reacting against the declaration and positions then tend to become
more entrenched.
I have been following the diverse views expressed in this thread so far and
it does seem to be making progress and allowing a range of ideas to be
canvassed. Hopefully that will continue and a consensus will emerge.
regards,
Steve

The debate about a date for a National Pc day will go on till the cows come
home as we will never reach agreement in this way. Shame we couldnt of had
more discussion about this at apc9 seeing it was on the program agenda for
months leading up to it. I've been involved with this issue since apc8
along with John Champagne who originally proposed it and I feel
disappointed and frustrated it continues to be unresolved.
I still propose we make it May 4th each year on Bills birthday in
recognition of Bill founding and developing the pc movement, which is after
all what we're trying to promote isnt it? This way we can honour his
contribution and remember him into the future. Its also a good time of the
year when its not too busy. Enough is already happening in spring for many.
It is impossible to remove personalities from pc and there is no point
pretending we can. Id instead propose we acknowledge what each one has
offered and appreciate them for who they are. Other days and events could
be developed around other personalities (David et al) in the future and
national convergences could be used to acknowledge people and their work as
mentioned many times before.
What Id really like to know is, does anyone have any suggestions as to how
this issue should be resolved? what should be the decision making process
for the movement? and who should be involved? Is the movement capable of
making a decision? ( I havnt witnessed it yet) Wouldn't convergences be the
appropriate forum for such decision making? (this list serve certainly
isn't). Do we have to wait for yet another convergence which may be years
away without a decision? I don't think so. In view of the circumstances,
we need perhaps another way on this issue. Sorry cant wait, I'm moving
forward and groups are ready to go with this. Lets declare this 4th May the
first National Permaculture Day!
