If you want more clearance from the cars while riding on the road, you could 
try a horizontal flag.

  a.. Improves Visibility at Night
  b.. Prevents Cars from driving too close
  c.. Increases Cyclists Road Presence
  d.. Easy to Fit - All Fittings and Instructions Included
  e.. Fits to rear part of bicycle frame tubing, either the seat stays or 
the chain stays
  f.. Flag pivots to be flush with the bicycle frame when not in use
