CAPE Update April 6, 2008
Greetings all
Website Update :(
After finally getting the web site working again (after the second round of
strange tamperings that brought it down) and updating tour information, over
the Easter weekend there was a subsequent third sabotage of the site which
we have not been able to resolve to date. This time the member database
functions have been hacked and nobody can log onto the site, this includes
access to the backend by the webmaster and administrator . So while the site
appears for the public to view, members cannot log in and the site content
cannot be changed the site is effectively frozen in time. So sincere
apologies to all our site members and students for not being able to log in
and also to those who¹ve sent in updated info on Roberto¹s tour events for
the website that¹s not been published. If the issue cannot be resolved soon
we will be looking at alternative strategies to relaunch the site elsewhere.
We will keep you informed of progress.

Roberto¹s Oz Tour is going exceptionally well and a huge thank you and
congratulations to sponsors and all the event convenors and hosts. In
between the following appearances, Roberto has given numerous media
interviews for national and local radio. NimFM did a series of in-depth
interviews which are posted as podcasts at the following link:

A short feedback on the tour thus far:
Byron: visited Seed Savers and the evening event at the Community Centre
featured an interesting and lively panel discussion on issues of food
security didn¹t do a head count but estimated approximately 80+ attendees.
Helena Norberg-Hodge took the opportunity to film an interview with Roberto
to include in her new documentary.
Nimbin: great turn out for a small village had 70 people registered and
130 turn up on the night. Raised $1000 for the CAPE Fund.
Lismore SCU: A fantastic and successful day (over 200 attendees) convened by
Lismore City Council and Southern Cross Uni, excellent speakers including
Roberto, Russ Grayson, Jude Fanton, Leigh Davidson and others, and a
delicious lunch from all local products.
I drove Roberto from the North Coast to Sydney with a few scenic tours off
the highway so he could experience some of the countryside.
Ku-ring-gai Council Chambers: The chambers hall was packed with around 150
people. Excellent introduction by the Mayor.
University talks: UWS and US Roberto met with groups of very keen students
great Q & A sessions
Glengarry APC9: Welcome dinner. Following the welcome to country and Mayor¹s
welcome, Roberto¹s presentation really shone, was a wonderful evening and
start to the convergence. A big thank you to the Pc North team for
organising such a wonderful event and for their support as a major sponsor
of CAPE.
After APC9, Roberto enjoyed visiting the Sydney Botanic Gardens and short
dip at Bondi before heading to the Blue Mountains and a visit to the Jenolan
Caves (he¹s also a keen caver, spelunker and speleologist).
Blue Mountains: lunchtime meeting with BM Council staff generated
thought-provoking discussions, visits to some inspiring local permaculture
gardens and another great evening with hall at the Carrington packed and
people standing, approx 150 in attendance. Appreciated the Welcome to
Country.
Petersham Town Hall: Amazing evening dance and music was colourful,
professional and fun, Green Left Weekly did a great job with the catering.
By the time Roberto spoke the hall was packed. Don¹t have final numbers on
attendees but estimate around 400 people. Good to have the welcome country
and the Marrickville mayor speaking.
After the Petersham event, Roberto has been travelling solo on his southern
leg of the journey and we¹ll report on that next update.
>From Adelaide, Roberto will return to Sydney to speak at the Climate
Change|Social Change Conference http://www.greenleft.org.au/conference.php,
then next week to Queensland for his final public appearances in Brisbane
and Sunshine Coast, Future Ready Expo April 18-19, and a few days to sort
things out, pack and return to Cuba.
Thursday 24th April, 6.30 for 7pm screening of Cooperatives in Venezuela
followed by Goodbye and Thank You party for Roberto. At Djanbung Gardens
bring food & drinks to share.
CAPE Funds
By end of next week most of the event funds from the tour should be
finalised and we will know if all costs for the exchange have been covered.
We are hoping for a small surplus to provide resources to permaculture
projects in Cuba. One of the key resources they have difficulty accessing is
good garden tools, especially garden forks for loosening soil and making
compost. Roberto will taken to several places with tools to make a short
list of the most useful tools that aren¹t available in Cuba and we will
develop a list of of other key resources that we will be trying to source.
All donations are deeply appreciated.
