The thing is with the closure of the CSIRO scour is that it's not only a scour, but a research facility as well. They have researched into, developed, invented and advanced the ways of processing wool. They have all been able to scour and card many different varieties of wool, of different microns, lengths and colour. Most wool processing places (including the one in NZ, that they are now referring those who need to process large amounts of wool) can only process white fleece.
The CSIRO scour would process only large batches, that either those had that amount to process or businesses such as long tops would put together. Long tops is now doing their own scouring of small amounts of wool that clients, such as myself give them. Their prices have risen by nearly 50% because they are doing their own scouring, rather than batching together to give to CSIRO scour.
I've tried to scour and card my own wool... It's difficult and very time consuming, in my opinion and experience.
