Hi All,
I am really liking this direction, I had been wondering about a women's gathering, and I am really happy it has been suggested.
Certainly the most important thing for me that came out of APC9 was that I got to meet OTHER WOMEN in Permaculture, I didn't feel quite so alone anymore.
I had been thinking of a yearly (not necessarily though) women's PDC and meeting of permaculture women, to welcome new women PDC holders into the fold and allow them to meet a possible mentor. I speak from experience here - I have been 'Mentorless" for over a year now, everyone around me is very busy, I didn't know who to ask, and I hadn't met any women permies, except on the internet.
I think that a women's PDC followed by a "festival" is a great idea. It would be wonderful if it was a woman only environment (i too would love to see Nadia's hair), and it would be great if we could keep it really simple, perhaps as suggested at a scout camp or similar.
I have also been thinking that running women's PDCs are something I's like to do for a living...
I am happy to convene this or to be part of a troika or larger team. Anything really. I will need help, so please, keep in touch.
ps kerry, your grant sounds great. I am in the same shire, so I'd love to know what you're doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much love to all,
Tamara

I like the way this discussion is going and think these larger events
would/will? be wonderful. I wonder if there is also room for a smaller
local and on-going movement - women supporting women with
permaculture-related skills and knowledge - mentoring, labour-sharing,
workshopping.... Personally I would love to be involved with other
women a bit more doing this kind of thing.
We are in the process of applying for a shire community development
grant to help us get the project going, but we intend to see it through
whatever happens. If you'd like further info, I'll be developing an
information sheet soon and would be happy to forward it to the list...
cheers all and thanks so much for the great discussion!

Hi All,
I am thinking that what we need is a
women's gathering to share all this information.
Whilst there are many great things
that one can try to fit into a PDC, adding anything that is not already
in the curriculum is very difficult as there is already so much there -
especially if you are having fieldtrips too. And if it were any longer
than the two weeks it would not only be a complete brain overload, but
would become even harder for women to take time out from their usual
activities to attend.
I am all for a women's PDC; I have
been in discussion with Tamara about helping organise this one, but I
this is getting bigger. Potential subjects that have already been
mentioned, such as childbirth, health and fencing (what a lovely
combination of subjects!), are things that are of interest to so many
of us, and perhaps could attract a wider women's audience than just
those on a PDC - I am sure that many of us with a PDC already would
like to attend workshops on these and other things. It would also be a
bit of a professional development session for female
teachers/facilitators to experience other presenters and presentation
styles as well as new subjects.
It would also be good to hear some
more 'small stories' (as opposed to big-picture stories, not implying
that these things are actually 'small') - individual and personal
stories from women on the ground for their inspiration and knowledge...
How about a women's permaculture
festival? Maybe the women's PDC could run in the two weeks leading up
to it?
Thanks again to all involved in
APC9. Came home enthusiastic and inspired. Funnily enough though I have
found that there are still only 24 hours in a day and seven days in a
week so not much translation into action as yet...
Beck
