I got this reply form my friend Mary Cole when i email her...

"The Penicillium species is species to that area. Many microbes are used as 
biofertilisers. This
is why mulch is so important. Chemical fertilisers kill mycorrhizae and so 
do not allow phosphorus to be converted to usable form."
