Solid Edge 2D Drafting software has been made available as a free download,
as they make their sales from the 3D version.

For our purposes the 2D version is likely to be all we will want.

This software is full professional quality, and apparently can open and work
with autocad files.  I am told it is "better than autocad".

I haven't worked with it yet, I am presently engaged in the lower tech
occupation of fruit preserving and orcharding during this summer heat.
However a talented and uninhibited 13 yr old here has just used it
succesfully to draft some scale house plans, and says it was simple enough
to learn to use.
