I've just remembered reading somewhere that ants refuse to cross a line you 
draw on a surface with the chemical little pill they put in men's urinals as 
a disinfectant and deodorant. I don't know if this is true, or what the 
substance is. I am sure it's not something you'd want in your food (I mean 
even the unused variety), but it should be cheap and commercially available.
