Thanks Russ, I'm glad to hear that I'm on track with Rob's process.
Rob Hopkins has put all this transition initiative together very well. I
admire his ability to name, collate and present a movement, handbook and 12
step process. My focus in permaculture has always been a community and
bioregional focus (Ch.14 of the designers manual is my most read chapter),
and I admire permaculture pioneers like Colin Ball who did work in the
early 80's to develop community resilience and self-reliant communities, as
well as intentional community folk who have long explored into this area
(and long before permaculture existed).
Since 2001 I've had ideas of sound recording "the elders", as I've lived
next door to elderly men who have had great stories. First Ron and then
Don, and fortunately they are both still alive and I'm finally doing the
project! (thanks to dad) Unfortunately there's some (including Tony
Webber's father, the heritage apple and sheep farmer) who are too ill, or
have passed away and won't be able to be sound recorded.
I think I'll now closely study Rob's 12 steps... good that there's that
structure in place.
There's going to be an exhibition and screening of the A/V recording of the
elders, most likely in early Spring (date TBC) at the Forrest Community
Hall. Then a 12 week CO-EDAPT (Colac Otway Energy Descent Action Plan
Training) course, with the work of participants being displayed in the
CO-EDAPT Exhibition at Colac Otway Performing Arts Centre from January 20th
to Feb 20th 2009, and then it will tour our Shire's townships before being
part of the 2009 Apollo Bay Music Festival... if all goes well... I'm
really enthused about it! Not sure if this is following Rob's steps
though...
Anyway, I better get back onto the shire grant application as it's due
tomorrow :)
cheers
Fern

Congradualations Fern... well done in this project. What you've
inadvertently done is to take on one of the 12 steps in developing a
resilient community/transition initiative.
In that, what you're doing is what Rob Hopkins (author, The Transition
Handbook) calls 'honouring the elders' , which includes the collection of
oral history focused on how people lived before the age of oil abundance and
publishing it, so all can learn from it.
The following activity is to discuss how the most relevant of those ideas
could be replicated and adapted in contemporary circumstances.
