Med Biome
Over the next couple of weeks you'll see the wildflowers of the Californian foothills bursting into flower in our Mediterranean Biome. Another thing to look out for is the Dracunculus Vulgaris in the Mediterranean Biome which has a weird and wonderful maroon flower that stinks to high heaven! It's a real must-see, you'll find it flowering in the Cork Exhibit under the cork trees for the next two weeks.
Rainforest Biome
We have some mini versions of our famous Titan Arum - Amorphothallus sp. (Elephant Yam) springing up in the Malaysia area of the Biome, to find them just follow your nose! A more pleasant fragrance can be found wafting from our Brugmansia sp. (Angels Trumpet). It's on the top path by waterfall and next to new Soya exhibit. It has huge pendant, yellow or pink trumpet shaped flowers with a faint fragrance. However don't be misled by its good looks and attractive smell - it is a dark horse! It's very toxic and was used by shamans to achieve altered states of consciousness and by muggers in Bogota!
Other plants to keep an eye out for are Thumbergia mysorensis. This pretty climber is flowering in the weeping fig by Tropics Trader. Tabernanthe Montana (Crepe Jasmine) is another must see. This highly scented flowering shrub can be found in the West Africa area of the Biome. Finally, don't miss our Annanas comosus - Pineapples! Most of our plantation is fruiting up at the moment and it won't be long till we have a crop of ripe fruit. You'll find them next to the bamboo house in Crops and Cultivation. Pina colada anyone?!
Outdoor Landscape
Our stunning blue border is starting to flower and will reach its peak during the next couple of weeks. At the moment Meconopsis betonicifolia (Himalayan poppy) is amongst the first to begin the show. The Trollius (globe flower) around the bog garden beside the Core are also flowering. Take a stroll up to Wild Cornwall and you'll find our wild flower meadow beginning to bloom too including the rare and beautiful, Lychnis flos-cuculis (ragged Robin).
