            IN THIS ISSUE:
            1. UNDERSTANDING THE LIQUIDITY SQUEEZE

I published an op-ed titled "Unbounded Uncertainty" in The
Toronto Globe and Mail on August 14. The article provides three pointers to
help people track the unfolding subprime mortgage crisis.

"Spreading the risk has simply created unbounded uncertainty.
The superb credit ratings given mortgage-backed securities were often
justified on the basis that securitization spread the risk around the world
and across many classes of investors. But now we're finding that it's almost
impossible to tell who is exposed to the downgrading of the value of these
securities and who isn't."

            2. TWO REPORTS ON OIL
I published an op-ed titled "The Age of Cheap Oil is Ending" in
The Toronto Globe and Mail on August 6. The article discusses recent reports
by the National Petroleum Council and International Energy Agency on
emerging constraints on global oil supply.

"On July 18, the National Petroleum Council delivered a
blockbuster report to the US Secretary of Energy. The report - entitled
Facing Hard Truths about Energy - assesses the future of oil and natural gas
to 2030 in the context of the global energy system. Its 400 pages reveal a
major shift in the energy industry's publicly stated views about humankind's
energy prospects: We're running out of cheap oil. The same shift is apparent
in another report also issued in mid-June by the Paris-based International
Energy Agency. This one covers trends in oil supply and demand till 2012."
