Eco Centor
Turning Waste to Wealth Report
Thanks to the Engineering Department Eco centro is going full steam ahead. A
big thanks to Mahesh and Anbalagan.
The process has been to discuss design with Anbalagan draw it in 3D, print
out, go over the plan, get advice from Mahesh then commit to building. It
is a good method and working well. A special big thanks to (Mr Fix It)
Anbalagan for his help and very good advice.
All the rooms are now concreted and the walls plastered. The temporary
workshop is almost ready for tools to go into the area and safely stored
under lock and key.
The Wet kitchen waste area is ready for the Bio Gas unit which I hope we can
have up and running about the same time as the Pyrolysis plant. This means
that we can significantly increase the use of kitchen waster to turn it into
Bio Gas and Bio fertiliser for our gardens. Mahesh is organising an
Engineer specialising in Charcoal and Bio gas units so we will have
everything ready for his help and advice when he gets here hopefully next
week. I would also like him to talk with our Gov't contacts in Male before
he goes back.
We will clear an area behind Eco centro where all the Cudgen and significant
amount of cardboard can be laid down for future fertility for Passionfruit
bamboo, banana and paw Paw tree. The idea is to get trees and vines up fast
so that Eco Centro is not visible from the air.
Water:
There is enough roof space to capture water for drinking purposes and
cleaning purposes if we are prudent in it's use.
Energy:
We have designed all the heat production in one area. I am very hopeful that
we can produce a significant amount of energy via Bio mass that will run the
centre and feed electrical energy back into the grid. I looked at the
figures that Andy came up with on our Bio Mass it is huge!!!. I am hoping
the expert we are getting from India can give us a conversion of energy we
are burning compared to the energy we get from diesel. My gut felling it
will be in excess of 10% in which case a small steam turbine or heat engine
could well be economically viable and save significant amounts of Diesel
fuel. I would also like to fit Solar panels and a wind mill. All the
energy we collect can be stored in a Vanadium battery and the excess feed
back into a grid debit credit system. All available in off the shelf
systems.
Land:
I want the building and land to look neat and smart! At the moment we have
an Ugly duckling. Hopefully by mid year it will look like a beautiful swan.
The contractors we have down there are very good tradesmen and very fast. If
we can keep up the momentum we should be able to officially open the Eco
Centro by mid year. My first calculations on the site was that we needed
about three times the amount of land to handle our organic and non organic
asset waste. Looking at the figures from Andy would confirm my first
thoughts, however when Ralph's plant comes on line we will loose a lot of
kitchen waste so we may be able to handle everything within the area plus
the 200 hen jungle pen. One thing I am very confident is our ability to
produce surplus fertility for our gardens. If we are up and running by mid
year we will definitely be able to stop importing organic compost from
India!
Localisation:
Eco centro is shaping up as a good model for localising our Water Energy &
Land systems making the Island Eco Well again.
Money & Finance:
I think you all know by now I am not a bean counter. I'm very good at the
hands on down in the dirt organising and designing and building and very bad
at doing all the paper work for it. On that note I think the Eo Centro team
could do with the help of someone good at spread sheets from the accounts
department. It is important that we calculate the cost of the project so we
can show pay back times for eco systems as against fossil systems. So a
bean counter would be good.
We have a very good chance of getting significant funds from the Maldives
Government up to $50,000 possibly more. This could pay for the Alternative
energy system at Eco Centro. Vanadium battery, wind mill Solar panels. It
wouldn't pay for a steam turbine but that could be a down the track project
when we get the finance. My gut feeling is that a Bio mass electrical plant
would cost about 100 to 150 grand and would take about ten years to pay
back. That could be far quicker is the cost of diesel continues to rise
which of course it will!
Thus far we have built Eco Centro on peanuts probably about 10% of what a
consultancy firm would have charged us for advice and plans so well done
team where on track for the best example for Sustainable Eco Tourism in the
Maldives.
